car rental at Rome Ciampino

I'll be driving from Pompeii. Will return rental car and then start our Rome visit. Ciampino airport seems closer than FCO. Can't find out much about Ciampino. Anyone with experience? Appreciate feedback.

Ciampino is a secondary airport not well serviced by public transportation. Don't know the relative distances. All things being equal price wise, I would return to FCO and take the train to Rome.
