Car Rental at FCO-Rome

We are planning on traveling to Montefollonico in July with our family of 5 for a week. We are renting a car in the airport and driving south to our Villa. How crazy is it to drive out of the airport and south to Tuscany? We are thinking of dropping the car of in Orvieto or Chuisi at the end of the week and taking the train to Rome and picking up a driver to Positano for our next week in a Villa. I really don't want to drive to Positano,we've been before and that drive it hard and we are going in the beginning of July.

I priced out the trains vs. driver and it actually cheaper. I can get a driver to pick us up at the train station in Rome for $280.00 euro for all of us. And I priced the train to be $250.00 plus ferry and bus to be about the same.

Found this advice from the Slow Travel site invaluable when picking up and returning a car at Rome FCO. Why not return the car to the airport and then train into Rome?

A private transfer from Naples train station to Positano runs at about 90 - 100 euro for two passengers. More passengers will add to the cost.

Valerie - which company quoted you that price? The going rate Rome to the Amalfi Coast by private taxi/car is around 400 Euro.

I know. That's what I paid last time we were there. It's JoeBanana Limos and I think he is a reputable driver, he is listed on Slow Travel. He quoted me originally one way 330 Euro and than came down to 300Euro and than when I said I needed transfers both ways at the beginning and end of the week he said 280 Euro each way. I appreciate your concern and help. Let me know if he is reputable. Thank you.

Valerie - not come across the name before and he does not figure in the usual roll call of drivers mentioned on Tripadvisor. But that may not mean anything bad because there are many car services (and more each year) in the area. He says he is based in Vico Equense so may do most of his business around there rather than further along the coast.

Maybe the economic downturn is hurting and you've struck lucky!
