My wife and I will be traveling from Rome to Loro Ciuffenna this October 15th.. We are considering taking the train to Orvieto, renting a car, spending time in Orvieto before driving to Loro Ciuffenna. We would like to spend a little time in Civita di Bagnoregio on the way.. Is this advisable? Is the drive to Loro Ciuffenna a long one? Please give feedback. We will be staying 1 week in Loro Ciuffenna
From Rome the drive will be at least 2.5 hours. From Orvieto the drive will be at least 1.5 hours depending on traffic. Civita Di Bagnoregio is in the opposite direction. Only you can decide if this is advisable or not. If you have the time and want to visit it then you should.

If you go to Orvieto then to Civita you are back tracking. How about picking up your car in Rome?
I have read that driving in Rome is difficult. That is why I am considering taking the train to Orvieto and renting a car there.
If you need to go from Los Angeles to Bakersfield, would you rent a car in Los Angeles and drive to Bakersfield or would you take the Metrolink train to Lancaster and then rent a car to drive from Lancaster to Bakersfield?
I bet you'd rent the car directly in LA and drive to Bakersfield.
Driving in Rome is not any more difficult than driving in LA, which I presume you've done sometimes in your life. You just have to choose the rental office that is most convenient to get out of town.
Both train station locations (Termini station and Tiburtina station are easy to get to the freeway.
Now if you intend to visit Orvieto, then it might make sense to rent the car there after you visit the town on foot. However be aware that only Hertz is in Orvieto.
