Car Rental and Itinerary Advice – Florence to Arezzo and Beyond

Looking for advice on where to pick up a rental car in Florence. Mid-September
I'm renting through AutoEurope and see options at the airport, at the Santa Maria Novella Borgo Ognissanti office, or at the Florence Via Forlanini office. Any recommendations on the easiest or most convenient location?

Plan is to drive to Arezzo and stay there for 4 days, using it as a base for day trips to:
Sansepolcro, Cortona, Chianciano, and Siena — maybe even Perugia if time allows.
After Arezzo:
Option 1: Return car in Florence
Option 2: Drive to another town to drop off car and catch a train to Venice

Questions recap:
• Best rental car pick-up location in Florence?
• Suggestions for best place to drop off the car and catch a train to Venice?
• Anything to be aware of when driving in these areas (e.g., ZTL zones, overnight parking in Arezzo, etc.)?

Pick up at Florence train station location (SM Novella)
Drop in Arezzo then train to Venice( change in Florence)

Make sure all drivers have an IDP

There are multiple threads here with instructions how to exit Florence with car

You’ll need to check parking at your Arezzo lodging

Good recommendation but I think dropping off care in Arezzo doubles the car rental but I will confirm.

Make sure all drivers have an IDP We always do.

There are multiple threads here with instructions how to exit Florence with car. Yes I see that now and looks hilariously complicated and expecting a ticket eventually. LOL.

You’ll need to check parking at your Arezzo lodging. Any recommendations on lodging?

Why not train to Arezzo and pick-up and drop off the car there? And then train to Florence and switch to the train to Venice? I believe there is even on train direct from Arezzo to Venice but the timing is not great since it arrives late.

The train to Arezzo is an hour or so but it is the same speed as driving so you don't really lose any time and you save a bunch in expense with drop off fees - and potential ZTL tickets.

Arezzo has a huge parking lot essentially behind the town and escalators to deliver you to the top of the hill from there.

There is a severe, narrow "core of old town" ZTL a couple of blocks long that is 8:00am to 24:00 and a milder outer areas of town ZTL for a couple of hours in the morning and evening.

I would check with where you're staying to see if you can get an exemption - maybe just for checking in and out or for parking.

Have a great trip,

If you select Avis-Budget in the AutoEurope website, the Arezzo office is very conveniently located across the street from the Arezzo station, so you could easily take one of the many trains to Arezzo and not bother with driving from Florence. Europcar is also near but not really walking distance. Not sure about Hertz.

Then I would return the car at the same location in Arezzo and take the train from Arezzo to Venice (one train change in Florence is required in almost all cases).

Be aware that Arezzo also has a ZTL (map and info below), therefore, if you plan to have a car while there, choose your accommodations judiciously.

@Hiredman, great links and appreciate the ‘why didn’t I think of that’ Arezzo to Venezia. Italo treno has many day options vs. Trenitalia (after 8pm, or maybe the schedule is not yet loaded).

Citto=ragazzo (boy or boyfriend)
Citta=ragazza (girl or girlfriend)
Cittino=bambino
Cittina=bambina
and most importantly:
Alò! = Come on! Let’s go!
