Car rental agencies in Italy

Any suggestions for reliable agencies with reasonable fees for rental and insurance which are all disclosed up front with no surprises when you show up to pick up the car?

have used Autoeurope 3x, was fine each time. Bring your own GPS is a suggestion I'd add rather than paying for a car equipped with one (because they're generally not, all you're doing is renting a handheld unit anyway).

Tom - Here's our experience with car rentals in Europe...

We've had good luck with Sixt in Italy and Slovenia/Croatia. The prices can sometimes a little more expensive than other places, but they disclose everything up front and have never been charged more than the original quote. A couple of times we have purchased the $0 deductible insurance for peace of mind and it was cheaper than other agencies.

We have also used the discount agency Carjet with no issues. They describe the cost and all the options up front. The local agency does charge a fee for a tank of fuel at the beginning of the rental, but they do credit it back when you return it full.

For both of those, we have paid at the time of rental. For pre-pay options, we have also used Kemwel. They show different prices for the car classes, but if you call they will explain the difference - it seems to be in the insurance coverage or deductible that differ between vendors.

We used Avis for one day in Madrid Spain (at one of the train stations) and we had a difficult time getting the quoted rate with our internet printout and not to be charged in dollars. That was an experience I would not like to repeat.

Enjoy your trip!

I have used Autoeurope on several trips with no problems.

I've used the brokers at carjet.co.uk with no problems...everything clearly spelled out in advance, including the amount of deductible you may be responsible for (if you don't take the super CDW.)

We have used both Autoeurope and Hertz in Italy, both with good service and no problems or "undisclosed fees".

We found they can be quite different in terms of opening hours of the pick-up and drop-off offices, and length of minimum rental, etc. Sometimes that makes the difference.
