Car rental

We have heard how crazy it is to drive in Rome and we want to rent a car when we leave Rome to tour the Tuscany area, but we don't want to pick up the car in Rome. We will probably rent through Autoeurope and they give 2 airport locations for car pick up as well as other sites. Where would be the best place outside of Rome to do this? We plan to take a taxi from our hotel to the location so it has to be within a reasonable distance. Thanks in advance for your help.

Many people choose to take the train to either Orvieto or Chiusi to pick up their rental car. You could leave from either Termini or Tiburtina, I believe

Thanks for your prompt response. I think I will first look into Termini and Tiburtina since that might be a quicker way to start touring rather than train to car.
Thanks again.

We took the train and picked ours up in Orvieto. We stuck our bags in the trunk of the car and then spent some time in town. I'm so glad we did. Orvieto was great!!

Carole - Termini and Tiburtina are train stations in Rome.

The people who pay for trains, taxis, and cars in the same day are RS addicts who have money to burn. Or have been hornswagled by folks who ........ It ain't hard to drive out of Rome. Get the car at the closest place to the hotel and get on with it. You'll be in Orvieto while the timid are still looking for the car joint.
