Car or train from Florence to Pompei (or Sorento?)

Any suggestions on renting a car in Florence. We're thinking of spending New Year's Day driving from there to Pompei (or Sorento) and then returning the car in Rome on Jan 3. Are we better off taking a train?

Thanks!

Yes. Trains are easy and inexpensive. Cars are a hassle to park and you don't want to drive in Rome or Naples. For the limited amount of time you'll have you'll be better off with a train.

Does anyone know if it's better to stay in Pompei or Sorento if we travel from Florence by train? We'll be in the area for two nights before leaving for Rome. Is it easy to get around without a car?

That would be a gorgeous drive! Especially if you take the back roads. You will see some wonderful villages and great scenery! Stay in Sorrento and return the car at the airport in Rome and you'll be ok.

Does anyone know if there's a one way charge for such a car rental? We're staying for 5 days in Rome so I'd have to return the car in town.
