Car or No car in Montepulciao

Myself and three friends are traveling to Montepulciao and staying there for three days. As of now we do not plan on renting a car but are beginning to think it might be needed. We arrive and leave by train from Chiusi, tickets already reserved. So question is rent a car in Chiusi to travel the area for a few days or taxi and tour with companys ?

You have about 25 km each way between Chiusi and Montelpulciano. You could do that by bus if you want. But with three days, personally, I'd want a car so I could take day trips with the freedom and flexibility to take as little or as much time as I want. Split among four of you, the cost of a rental shouldn't be too bad, probably less than hiring taxis and tour companies.

We had a car because we were driving among various towns (Volterra, Montepulciano, Orvieto and surrounding areas). Our place had parking for us which in and of itself was quite interesting. We stayed in each of those 3 towns for several nights.

The remaining issue is whether your main interest is wineries with tastings. Drunk driving is even more stringently enforced in Europe than it is in the US (Mindy, you can put your home country (??) in your profile without fear of being hacked ... ) If your touring is more general interest, you certainly need a car for Tuscany. International Driving Permit document needed.

We explored this area without a car and I now wish we would have rented one. Buses can be infrequent or just not run at a time that works for you. You'll be able to see a lot more if you rent a car.
