We are taking a RS tour ending in Rome. We want to go to Siena for 4 days, then fly out of Bologna. I think we will need a car in the Hill towns, but don't know whether to rent a car for Siena only, or rent in Rome, drive to Siena, then to Bologna, vs. train/bus travel. We have not driven in Italy, but have a Int. license. Advice?
It all depends on several factors. If you wish to really explore the coutryside and lots of towns, then you'll need the car. And if you wish to stop along the way to Siena, you'll need the car starting in Rome. But all three cities are easily connected by bus and even rail. And from Siena there are lots of busses to the main hill towns. Problem is you can really only visit one town a day - there and back. Busses between towns are almost non-existant.
