Car necessary in the Dolomites?

We will be arriving in the Dolomites by train from Naples into Bolzano (unless someone has a better idea). We are planning on spending 3 nights. Many people on other posts suggest using Val Gardena as a base instead of Castelrotto as suggested by RS. My question: is it necessary to rent a car or can you get to the various villages by bus easily. There are 5 of us and with a quick search at Auto Europe, it doesn't seem Balzano would have a car big enough for us and we are leaving on Sunday when they are closed. Can we get by without a car, or should we take the train to some other town and rent a car there and drive the rest of the way...if so any suggestions on what town? We are there primarily to take a couple of hikes and to visit the villages.

A car is much more convenient. Ck trains stations in Padua or Verona to pick up a vehicle. you will be happy you did espec with 5 people traveling.
