Car Insurance for Rental in Italy

Hi Team,

We are renting a car in Italy for 10 days with pickup in Rome and dropoff in Milan. We'll be driving to Assisi and then to Cinque Terra. The rental car company is offering rental car insurance. I've checked both my credit cards and neither provide coverage in Italy. Are there options to get my own coverage directly at a lower cost?

Appreciate any and all feedback. Thanks!

Take the car rental offer. Italy has some special rules regarding car insurance that is required. Someone else will come along and explain it better. However, third party car insurance in Europe can be a real problem if you have to make a claim. This is not a time to fuss about saving a few dollars.

I don’t know the details of your rental but you might want to check prices on AutoEurope.com. I’ve rented in Italy numerous times on my 12 visits there and always have chosen zero deductible insurance much to my good fortune. My careless driving and damage caused by others has easily exceeded repair costs vs. insurance costs.

If you do go to AutoEurope, don’t go by the lowest price on the grid. That’s for basic rental fee. Check the total cost - basic fee+drop off fee+additional insurance. Weighing the total cost of your trip, the additional insurance cost and peace of mind are normally worth the price.

Definitely take the car rental offer. Credit cards only work so well anyway.. The Peace of Mind is worth it for entire coverage.
