Car in Naples

I am going to Naples with the intention of going to Amalfi. I know everyone says no car ..but I would like to go to Pompeii and Amalfi. Total of 4 days. Should I get a car to go to Amalfi and Pompeii ? Return the car back and off to Rome.

No
Use public transportation or hire a driver
Car will just be a headache
Parking, driving is a big issue in Naples and anywhere on Amalfi coast

There’s a reason everyone says no car

If you stay in Naples, absolutely don't rent a car. It's more hassle than having a car in Manhattan.

You can visit Pompeii by taking the commuter train (Circumvesuviana) Napoli-Sorrento, and get off at Pompei-Villa dei Misteri. The station is almost across the street from the Archeological park.

To visit Amalfi coast, take the same train all the way to Sorrento, at the end of the line, then at the Sorrento station take one of the Sita buses that go back and forth between Sorrento and Amalfi. The Amalfi coast road can get congested at times with all the tourists driving there, but the absolutely biggest issue is parking, which is scarce to non existent (or expensive if you can find a pay lot with vacant stalls). It is much easier to get on and off the buses and avoid the hassle of finding parking. Another cool way to see the coast is to take the boats/ferries, which stop at both Positano and Amalfi. They are not car ferries (passengers only).

Be stressed out and on edge driving Amalfi instead of sitting back and enjoying the views? No thanks

Everyone says "no car" for a reason. It's a worse experience in almost every regard

Ah..... the perpetual optimist !!! They " I know everyone says no car" are really wrong and I will be OK. So report back to us how it went with the rental. I am opened to having my mind changed with newer facts or experiences.

Hah, about 10 minutes of walking around Naples and you will think “Thank god I didn’t rent a car.” And after about 10 minutes on an Amalfi Coast bus, you’ll say the same thing. :)

We visited both Naples and the Amalfi Coast last October. So glad we did not have a car in Naples. We rented a car at the Naples airport after our in Naples time for our trip to Puglia. We did drive the car to Amalfi town from Salerno and parked it there for out coast visit. You can get around by bus or boat. It was a little harry getting situated in Amalfi. Our B and B arranged parking. This consisted of going to the bus area and finding "the guy". After a bit of confusion determining exactly where to meet we found him. He took over the driving and let us off at some steps where we walked to out B and B. He then drove off with the car and then met us a few days later near the steps. No receipt, no ticket. apparently, the B and Bs contract with people to park cars outside of town. That experience was enough stress. Amalfi town is the end of the line for most of the busses. North of there it is so much more harry. Not to mention that sometimes there are restrictions on when you can drive.

I did rent a car to see the Amalfi Coast but I based in Salerno and it was February when traffic was light, parking was ample and cheap and ferries weren't running. I missed seeing the coast from the water and hope to go back sometime without a car. Before Salerno, I spent 5 days in Naples and saw the worst traffic and worst driving (not bad driving bur rather rogue driving - ignoring pedestrians, traffic signals and laws) I'd ever seen in Europe.
