We have decided to brave driving on the wrong side of the road and hire a car when we are in Siena for a day to see the surrounding towns. We are then heading down to Assisi and I don't know if driving from Siena to Assisi is best or to get the bus and hire a car down near Assisi for a day. We will want to avoid the motorways so any suggestions as the best way to go would be appreciated.
Congratulations on tackling the "wrong" side of the road. It's refreshing to hear that from your point of view, as in my whole life I've only heard driving on the left as being the wrong side. (By the way, I understand a bill has been introduced in Ireland to switch to driving on the right in an effort to put an end to accidents caused by right-driving tourists.)
Taking a bus from Siena to Assisi will certainly get you there faster, via the less scenic high-speed motorways. But Rick Steves mentions scenic drives out of the Siena area, with Highway 438 southeast of Siena to Asciano then scenic Highway 146 from San Quirico d'Orcia by Montepulciano and on southeast.
I don't know about your desires and time constraints, but if it were me, I'd take the car and explore these drives, and whatever I might find along the way between Siena and Assisi.
Helen, as a fellow Aussie who drives on the correct side of the road, I had no problems at all. With the steering wheel on the left side, it all fals into place.
