Car Hire to Bolzano / Ortisei Instead of Train

Eight of us will be traveling to Ortisei via Bolzano later this year. Two of us went previously and took the train from Venice to Bolzano, with a change in Verona. I was thinking it could be more convenient with 8 if we could hire a car service this time. Depending on airfare deals, our arrival city could be either Venice, Milan or even Munich.

Does anyone have experience using a car service from those cities to Bolzano? Any recommendations? Or is the train option the better alternative? (as far as renting, I'm not sure any of us feels confident enough to drive a big van all that way).
Thanks.

I've never used a service like that. I think it will be quite expensive (128 miles each way, and you'll be paying for the roundtrip; driving time over 3-1/2 hours), but with eight people sharing the cost, it might be a worthwhile luxury. You might check the website mydaytrip.com. As far as I can tell, it's a third-party operation connecting travelers with transportation providers; it doesn't actually employ the drivers (who no doubt pay a commission for the lead). I know several posters here have used the company and been happy with the results.

When you ask for a cost estimate, you're prompted for not only the number of passengers but also the number of suitcases. I can see how the number of bags could be an issue; it might make a larger vehicle necessary. How will your group feel about traveling light?

That is going to be very high cost as acraven points out. The train is easy, though, as well as economical.

I would recommend a taxi service from Bolzano to Ortisei. We do that every years now and for the two of us it is €90 one way in a van that would hold, perhaps, 6 people. So you might need two. Your lodging in Ortisei can probably arrange this for you, we use Taxi Ivan http://taxi-ivan.com/. You could contact him for a quote.
