We are going to rent a car in Rome (after 3 days there), drive through Tuscany and stay there for 5 days then drop the car in Florence so we can take the train to Paris. Where is the best place to pick up the car in Rome and drop it off in Florence? Thanks!

Many reporting in here return a car at the Florence airport, to avoid the big fines for driving in the infamous Florence ZTL's that blanket the historic core of the city.

Rent in Orvieto (see Orvieto while you are there) and return at the Florence airport (well outside the ZTL). Take a taxi to the train station from there. Do not drive in Rome or Florence.

So it's best to take a train from Rome and rent a car in Orvieto and then drop it at the airport in Florence? We are planning on taking the train from Florence to Paris.
