car for Florence to San Gimignano then Rome

Hi!
Will be in Florence early June and want to rent a car in Florence ( for 5 people / AUTOMATIC transmission ) to drive first to San Gimignano ( stay over in San G) and then drive the next day to Rome and drop car at Rome airport. This is proving to be rediculously expensive!! Hundreds of dollars for 2 days....
Anyone know any companies that have automatic cars or any ideas? SAn G is not accessible directly by train,

Has anyone done day bus trip from Florence to San G and would you reccommend for 2 adults and 3 young 20's?

If the main purpose of this expensive car is to get to San Gimignano, then I'd skip it and take the bus. The benefit of a car would be if you have time to stop at a few more Tuscan towns that are also off the rail line. Two-day car rentals cost more than three-day rentals, to discourage short-term reservations.
