Has anyone taken the car ferry from Villa San Giovanni (Reggio Calabria)to Messina? I see where it takes 20 minutes to cross the Straits of Messina. If so, how was the experience and cost?
Unless there is a storm, it's like taking a boat from Tampa to St. Petersburg. The cost of ferrying your car across I think is around 30 euro (one way). The r/t ticket would give you a little discount if you plan to go back across within 90 days. Then you need to add one euro per passenger.
The crossing takes 20 minutes but if your ferry also takes buses and trains it could take some time to load (although as I recall cars unload first).
Yup, right around 20 mins. Loading up in San Giovanni was pretty quick and painless but less so on the Messina side on the way back. I think we paid somewhere around 60 euro for roundtrip/car/4 people.
Thanks for all of your advice!
