Car drop off location in Florence

We are dropping off a car in Florence Thursday May 17th. Which location should I choose?

Borgo Ognissanti is NOT near the autostrada. It’s in the city center.

Jim, tell me which company you rent from and where you will be coming from and I will give you the options.

We are coming from Siena and staying at a residence in Florence at Via della Pergola, 42
50121 FIRENZE.

Thanks for your help.

And, the rental company is Hertz.

The easiest would be:
HERTZ
Via Giorgio Ambrosoli 30
Coming from Siena, enter the A1 freeway at FIRENZE IMPRUNETA. Take direction to ROMA then exit at the next exit FIRENZE SUD. After paying toll go straight on the Marco Polo expressway. The Expressway ends at the Varlungo bridge immediately after crossing the Arno river. At the light turn right. Hertz is on your right. There is a Toyota dealership there. After dropping car, take a taxi.
If instead you come from Siena using the Chianti Road (recommended scenic highway) you will end up on the same Marco Polo expressway.

Another option is to take the A1 (see above) but take direction to Bologna. Exit at FIRENZE SCANDICCI. Follow directions to city center (Centro) and drop car at
HERTZ
53 Via del Sansovino.

The Borgo Ognissanti location is in the city center. You can return there too, but there is a higher risk of accidentally getting lost and ending up inside the ZTL restricted zone, which is reserved to residents.

When in doubt, opt for the airport dropoff.

Don’t drop at the airport in Florence. In your case, coming from Siena or the Chianti Road, it would make no sense, unless it’s on a Sunday or after 7pm when the locations I mentioned are closed, but even in that case you can still drop off at the Borgo Ognissanti location.

I agree with myself. Don’t drop it off at the airport.
Coming from Siena it would be very inconvenient, as well as more expensive because it’s farther from the city center. The airport rental location in Florence isn’t even that easy to find or to drive to.
Via Ambrosoli or via del Sansovino are both convenient and far from the ZTL (if that is what you fear).

I just returned from Firenze and rented a car twice from Enterprise at the Borgo Ognissanti location. I had no problems. It appears you are staying at a location that could be reached by walking from Borgo Ognissanti. I liked the feature at Enterprise that you could drop off the car after hours for a USD$25.00 fee if necessary. The airport location for returning rental cars is going through a consolidation to an offsite location. I have read it could be hard to locate this site with a GPS. Not sure if Hertz would be affected by this.

Entering the ZTL should not be a problem upon returning the auto. If you drop off the auto soon after entering the ZTL the garage or rental agency reports your auto to the police and no fines will be accessed per what I have read.

If you return the car to Borgo Ognissanti, you can use Google Maps directions, and believe it or not, Google knows its way without sending you through a ZTL Camera.
In the destination box enter GARAGE EUROPA, Borgo Ognissanti, Florence.
The Garage Europa is where the rental car returns are located.

Regarding walking from the Garage Europa to Via della Pergola, I just want you to know it is not a short walk, and unless you have minimal luggage, I would invest in a taxi ride.

I am driving in from near Siena and returning a hertz car. Staying a couple blocks from Borgo Ognissanti. It looks like it is right in the ZTL. so if I drop it off there should ask them to call the police ?

It would seem crazy to have a rental car agency in the ZTL if cars could not get there legally

First of all you can legally enter the ZTL for a legitimate reason, such as going to a parking garage inside. Parking garages or rental car companies don’t call the police. They simply enter the vehicle’s license plate number in the so called White List of the City website. That prevents the City authorities from issuing automatic tickets. Borgo Ognissanti can be reached without passing through the ZTL cameras (if you know your way), but even if you accidentally make the wrong turn, as long as you remind the rental staff to enter your plate number in the White List, you are safe.
