Hi. We are planning on renting a car in Lucca and want to drop off near Rome. I wanted to drop off in Orvieto but apparently cannot do that with getting the car in Lucca.
My question: Has anyone dropped off a car at the Rome airport arriving from the north? What was it like? We have seen the drivers in Rome itself and do not want to get involved in that crazy scene! Is it doable to drop off at airport?
Thanks for any help.

Airport drop off is straightforward - you can stay on the ring road until you are nearly at the airport. Another option is Tiburtina train station. It is easy to access from the ring road too (and is closer to the city centre).
Or even the Termini station. Right off the main drag. Your GPS will get you there easily. We have dropped at the airport, just like any US airport drop, but the airport is 30 mins south of the city and then you have to take a taxi (45E) or the train back to Rome.
Dropping off at FCO is easy. I did it the first time I ever drove in Italy. We rented in Venice and dropped at FCO. Just get a GPS but have a good road map as a backup. You need both. The GPS is not always correct. We are dropping at FCO again in September but this time we are renting there too.
Yes, I've dropped a rental car off at the airport when coming from the north. It was straightforward.
For me, it added to the quality of the trip to do it that way.
Tiburtina station is easy.
We have dropped at FCO several times; it is easy and straightforward. As always review the drop off procedures and directions before you get there. And be sure to get a receipt that says the car was gassed and undamaged. Save your gas up receipt in case there is ever any issue.
The area just north of Rome is full of wonderful places to visit. Tarquinia and Cervetari have amazing Etruscan tomb sites and are worth a stop on your way in; the two sites are different enough that it is worth stopping at each if you have time. We once stopped at the hot spring of Saturnia on a trip south from Siena and soaked in the waterfall in the public park for free. It was one of the most memorable trips ever -- just fabulous. (no changing rooms and you will stink of sulphur but worth it) Sovana is a charming small town surrounded by Etruscan tombs in the hills. We got a map in town and then drove up to several of the tomb sites. Of course if you are on the highway then Orvieto is a great stop. Be sure to do the underground tour if you have time.
Thanks so much for all the tips!
