Capri - worth it or not (have 3 nights in sorrento only)

I've heard that Capri is little more than Italian Disneyworld. T or F

This is an extremely unpopular opinion on the Helpline, but I don't think Capri is worth the time and expense. Been there several times and have never been even slightly impressed. I love Sorrento, it's my favorite place in Italy. Also enjoyed Positano, Pompeii and Herculaneum a lot.

Yes, it is expense trip and over rated. Very crowed. I was there three week ago for a day trip.
Maybe it was the first and the last.

It's a getaway for the rich and famous, or at least it used to be. I was there in '08 and spent about the same amount of time on the Amalfi Coast. Capri is a pretty place to go to, and we spent an entire day there. We didn't do the usual tourist things like the Blue Grotto, but did take an open air taxi tour, did some shopping (very expensive), and had a fine lunch. There are some beautiful views and wonderful photo opportunities. It's all a matter of what you are looking for in a vacation. I am going back to the Amalfi Coast this September and will go back to Capri. As an alternative, I might suggest checking out Ravello instead.

Capri IS NOT and Italian Disneyworld. I don't think a daytrip does Capri justice. When I visited the first time on a daytrip, it was just okay. When I rented a villa for a week there, I fell in love with it. Just walking around the pedestrian alleys with the gorgeous flowers and dramatic views was divine - but then, so is the entire Amalfi Coast. I will be in Positano for a week this July with my family of four; and I was really shocked to see what it would cost the four of us to take the ferry over. I don't know if it's worth it to go for a daytrip. So, I kind of have the same dilemna. Ravello IS a must see as someone else has already pointed out.

I spent 2 nights in Capri and after the day trippers leave Capri is a nice place to stay. The island is very hilly and some great places to walk. Spent 1/2 day in Anacapri which was very nice. The time I went was in oct just before the stores start closing down for the winter. There is a large store in Anacapri which sells some of the most beautiful handmade wood products I have ever seen.

I suspect this might be a bit like judging Venice based on the daytripper experience between Rialto and St. Marks and Accademia. If you are there earlier in the day, in the evening, or even a few streets away from the main routes during the day then it changes the experience completely.

False. It is a great romantic place to visit. Walk around the island and absorb the beauty around every corner. The views are gorgeous out to sea and toward Italy's mainland. To experience this island you must get beyond the the tourist hub and be willing to relax and stroll. Take photos and enjoy the setting.
3 days is not much for Sorrento and surrounding areas best prioritize. We stayed 5 and wished I had at least another 3. Gd luck on your decision anyway you can't go wrong it is all wonderful!

I stayed over two nights and wasn't impressed. With only three nights in Sorrento I wouldn't. The boat ride to Positano is great with the blue sea and buildings clinging to the cliffs. If you find the lemon granita stand you're in luck!

I wasn't too impressed with Capri, however, I was only there for the day. However, I did like Anacapri and the views are wonderful.

When put up against the crime-ridden armpit of a city as Naples, it's fabulous. When put on another scale, that's when you get varying opinions. I personally like Capri.

I think it depends on what you like to do on vacation. We are just back from Italy and stayed on Capri for two nights. It was delightful. But, we visited a lovely garden in Anacapri, rode the cable cars to the top (lovely view/photo ops), then visited another lovely garden with great views in Capri. Coupled with a taxi convertible tour of the island, it was great fun. Great hotel & food, etc. Since were were on a guided tour, we also had the wonderful opportunity to visit a lovely private villa to hear a professor speak about her perspective of contemporary Italian society, then enjoyed wine/snacks on one of her terraces overlooking the sea (wow!). So, that special experience obviously impacts on my impression of Capri. We did not do the Blue Grotto experience, and we were there (obviously) in the early tourist season. In the afternoon (lunchtime through maybe 4:00) the main street in Capri was full of what appeared to be people from cruise ships on shore excursions. I'd guess the crowds thicken as tourist season heightens. Loved Sorrento and loved staying just outside Positano for two nights. Positano itself was very crowded when we walked through...narrow passages, etc. Pretty though. It's all so beautiful, you really can't go wrong with either choice....again depends on what YOU like doing.

Here's a vote for Capri. I can understand people saying it's not worth it though. But in same regard, Sorrento is not worth it. Both are touristy, hot & sweaty, & crowded. However...the beauty of this part of the country is amazing. You cant take a bad photograph here. Seeing Capri as you approach by boat is breathtaking. As are the views from the hills of the island looking down. Again...on the other hand...The island is overpriced and overloaded with tour groups, following their guides like little ducklings. On hindsight for me, I wouldn't have missed Capri & Sorrento for the world! Ask me if I'd go back....I'd have to say "Seen it, done it, did it".

I would definitely give a thumbs up to Capri. I've been there twice, staying overnight for multiple nights both times, and I still haven't seen it all; I'm definitely looking to go back again. The highlights can be skimmed in a day trip I guess, but I've found the true highlights to be up in Anacapri and on the back of the island (away from the most crowded parts of the island: the town of Capri, and around the main port). The early mornings and later evenings, when all the day-trippers have left, are the best times to be there, enjoying the island and the views. The locals then come out and are fun to meet. For starters, you can take a boat tour around the island, visit the blue grotto, take the chair lift to the top, or go hiking around parts of the island. Sure, I can imagine visiting the blue grotto mid-day (when there is a wait to get in and it is full of tourists) would probably not be as fun as it could be, but if you wait until the crowds are gone and are literally the only person inside the grotto, now that's quite an experience. Yes, the prices are relatively high...as are many places throughout Italy and even parts of the Amalfi coast. But if you've made it all the way over to Italy, made it down to the Amalfi coast, and are just a ferry's-ride away from a visit, I'd say it's worth it. At the very least, in the end, you can say from your own personal experience whether or not it was worth the visit and won't have to wonder if it was a missed opportunity.
