Capri vs Amalfi/Positiono

My sister and I are going to be in Rome in October. We are trying to decide upon a day trip to either Capri or Amalfi and Positiono. We would consider both but don't want to see to much of the same thing. What would you all recommend?

You did good to group them together....

You are doing it as a day trip from Rome? That will be a VERY long day.....but since it is a 1 stop and go, I would say go to Capri so you could see the whole island and its characteristics instead of getting to Amalfi or Positano and deciding where you wanted to go.....I could see myself wasting time trying to get places on the Amalfi Coast and not appreciating all that there is to offer.......I, as well as many other people, have done Capri in a day, it seems easier to me because there's not too much travel as soon as you actually GET there.....

Breinne,
If your planning the boat from Naples....Capri is about 40min and Amalfi 1hr 30min to 2 hours. You won't go wrong with either place. Have fun!

I haven't been to Capri. But I was staying in Naples, and took a day trip to Sorrento and Positano. I consider it a wasted day. Most of the day was spent in transit, and the region is one to linger in, not wizz through. I didn't enjoy a flying visit to these places at all. Doing it from Rome in a day would be torture. You really should focus on closer destinations; Pompeii is the furthest that is a practical daytrip from Rome. Or, take a couple of nights from Rome and spend them overnighting in the Sorrento-Amalfi Coast region, if you really want to see it and enjoy it.

Capri is one of the most magical places I've ever been to, so I might be a bit influenced by that sentiment when I say go to Capri. It is a very compact Island and while I prefer to spend two nights there, I'd say it's entirely possible to do most of it in a day and feel like you got a good feel for the island. It is also really easy to get to from Naples where as Amalfi and Positano, not so much. If you have a chance I'd recommend a private boat tour around the island. It isn't cheap, but it's worth every penny.

If you choose to go to Capri, and have the time, take a bus up to Anacapri. From there you can take the chair lift up to Mt. Salaro. The view is gorgeous...you'll see Gulf of Naples with Vesuvius in the background. Shopping is more reasonably priced in Anacapri compared to Capri.
On the other hand, Positano is a lovely village...very picturesque with some wonderful restaurants and shopping...albeit expensvie, but the shopping is wonderful.
