Will Capri be very crowded in early April? Would one be better off going to Ischia instead to avoid the crowds. Are weekends over run with people on Capri vs weekdays?

Well. If you just decide your travel plans based on tourist crowds you won't see much of Italy at all.
The only time those two islands have smaller crowds is when the weather is not amenable. You'll be fine, don't worry about crowds. Early April is less crowded than summer (unless it's "Easter week). And yes, weekends are more crowded than weekdays. But don't worry and go. They are both beautiful places.

We were in Sorrento the first week of April, 2012. It was Easter week.
It wasn't that crowded at all, our pensione had one other set of guests.
We never made it to any off-shore sightseeing because windy weather would not permit it.
