Capri in December?

Planning to visit in Capri in December. Would like to hear if anyone had experience with low season in Capri.

Will the weather be a show stopper?
Are there still restaurants and shops open? & Is public transportation / taxi still available? (or any suggested way of getting around)

Thanks!

I hope you get a reply. We don't have a lot of reports about this area off-season. You might Search (top left, blue) for some mentions of November or March that I sort-of remember. Also use your preferred climate website to get air and water temperatures for December. Have you found the off-season ferry schedule to download?

No experience of the place at that time, but I tell you a story. I have a dear friend working in Naples since 25 years; but he is from the north of Italy. Once I phoned him that a similar position had opened in Bologna, maybe he could be interested as he would have been quite near to his former home and his old mother. He replied me: "After I have been in Naples so long a time, I can't go back to the north. In my rest day I take the ferry to Procida or Capri, I spend the day there, and off season they are so quaint and quiet. And a bit of sun. No, I can't go back to the northern fogs".

So, probably you will find the place charming in a strange way, but do not think for a minute it will be beach or suntanning time. You will more likely be in need of a light trench. (Today is 68 °F in Capri, and we are still in October even if a cool one.)

Remember that Naples is at the same latitude of New York; Mediterranean climate does not mean tropical climate.

And...the only place on the peninsula that I can guarantee is open year-round is Sorrento, which is a good base for Capri...if you can get there. Ferry will definitely be subject to weather. December average temps are 59 high, 52 low, but that is probably misleading. We were in Sorrento in early March and it blew rain in the 40s for 3 days and our trip to Capri was cancelled. And this was after a beautiful week in Rome. So you never know.

I would base in Sorrento. if you get lucky and can visit Capri, so be it. If not, you still have Sorrento, which besides being a nice town to stroll in, has some of the best seafood in all of Italy, and you can visit Naples and even Pompei if you choose.

Hi Jay, thanks for the info. I am thinking about base in Napels and then take ferry over to Capri.
Do you know will the ferry be cancelled if the weather is bad?

The ferry will absolutely be cancelled if the weather is bad or if the sea is choppy. Safety first!

Here are the current schedules for ferry service to/from Capri. It's mainly between the island and Naples or Sorrento during winter but some other routes run on a limited basis.

A large part of Capri is pedestrian-only but buses will run between points in Capri town, Anacapri and some other locations (the island is small) as locals depend on them too, just as they depend on the ferries. As already mentioned, boat service will cancel if the weather is unsafe.
