I know RS recommends Sorrento but I've been there/seen that and would like to try something different. I was thinking of Capri as a home base to explore the Amalfi coast. I found a pretty inexpensive hotel there but I was wondering if the island has easy transportation to Sorrento, Positano, and Amalfi.
There are frequent ferries between Sorrento and Capri and in the summer to other places on the coast. However, unlike other public transportation in the area it is fairly expensive and at times the boats are very busy with long lines to board.
Fares Sorrento to Capri are about 13.50Euro - 14.50Euro pp each way.
You will rack up quite a large ferry bill if you use Capri as a home base. Capri is better as a day trip. Stick to Sorrento, Positano, or Amalfi as a home base. The ferrys are rather slow to the Amalfi peninsula. It took us a good hour or more to reach Capri from Amalfi. Do you really want to spend all your precious vacation time on the sea? Capri is not a very big place at all so you might get a little bored there once you've seen it all. There are plenty of inexpensive B & B's on the Amalfi Peninsula.
Melissa: You're the first one, here, that I can recall thinking of using Capri as a home base to explore the Amalfi peninsula/coast. Not that that's a reason, by itself, not to do it.I think the thinking of others has been (and as you say in your own original post), the usual concept of home basing involves the idea of picking a location that has convenient transportation to the other areas you want to see. And convenience, for most travelers, includes the minimizing of transportation cost, time, and difficulty. The other repliers have already given reasons why Capri doesn't fit that definition of home base. If you want to find a convenient, centrally located home base to explore the rest of the Amalfi peninsula (other than Sorrento), there are a number of choices you can make that are located on the south and west coasts of the Amalfi peninsula, the place you want to explore in the first place.
Thanks, you are right. I don't want to spend a bunch of time or money with the ferries. I will look up some alternate towns.
Hi Melissa, I am traveling to the area in early June and we are staying in Positano as our home base. I found a reasonably priced b&b, Residence la Tavolozza. It comes highly recommended on the RS website as well as tripadvisor. You should check it out!

Melissa, I would recommend another city along the coast such as Positano or Amalfi. Capri is worth a visit, but is a small island & as other posts stated, pricey! If Positano, stay at Residence la Tavolozza (Room 4 or 5) is reasonably priced and each room has a beautiful terrace over looking the town & the sea! Drive to the Medieval town of Ravello, absolutely stunning! Happy travels!
