Do we stay in Capri or is that more of just a day trip? If we should stay...any good hotel suggestions? Thanks!
Allison - Truthfully, one day is sufficient for Capri. It's Beautiful coming into Marina grande - You can take the cable car or funicolare from the port up to Capri Town and then a Bus to Anacapri if you want to see The famous Villa San Michele!!
And, of course you may want to see The Blue Grotto - But one day is enough to do all of that without really rushing. If you decide you want to stay an extra day The Grand Hotel Quisisana in Capri Town is FANTASTIC!!
Enjoy, Ciao, Greg
Hi Allison - I agree that 1 day is enough for Capri. We used Sorrento as our home base on the Amalfi Coast as it was easy to get to Capri and other places (Pompeii & other Amalfi Coast towns). We just took the boat early that morning so we felt like we had enough time to spend on the island. The blue grotto was I neat experience...but crowded and thought it was a little expensive. But I think worth it for one time. I also just enjoyed walking around Capri and there is a hike you can do in Anacapri.
Have a great trip!
Capri can easily be done as a day trip. You won't want to lug your bags all that distance to spend more than one day. If you are coming from somewhere outside Naples or the Amalfi peninsula, such as Rome, you will want to take a very early train so that you arrive early enough to get a full day's experience. Trains run often, but depending on the time of year, the ferry schedules can change. Check the ferry schedules.
I agree with Maria, we've stayed in Sorrento on 3 trips to that area and highly recommend it as a base. We've stayed at Hotel La Tonnarella each time, love it.
allison,
I tend to agree with the others in that one day should be adequate for Capri. However, if you want to have a good look around both Capri and Anacapri as well as see the Blue Grotto, two days might be better. Staying at least one night would provide a slightly different view of the town, after all the "day trippers" have left.
If you are considering staying at least one night, keep in mind that the Hotels tend to be quite "upscale" (meaning "expensive"). I checked out a few of them when I was last there, and decided they were a bit out of my budget range. I'd have to check my notes (which I don't have with me at the moment) to provide Hotel names. When you see some of the stores there, you'll get some idea of the price range (Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, Girgio Armani, Prada, etc.).
Staying in either Sorrento or Positano would be good for trips to Capri. If you're just going for the day, be sure to note the time of the last boat!
One other point to mention - the Funicular between Marina Grande and Capri can be a bit "busy" in the late afternoon, with long queues. If you find this to be the case, I'd suggest taking one of the open-top Taxis back down to the harbour (it's a very pleasant ride).
Happy travels!
