Capri crowds compared to Amalfi

Is Capri as crowded and touristy as Amalfi and Positano for a day visit in July? We just spent the day visiting Amalfi and Positano by boat as we are based in Sorrento. due to visit Capri on Friday July 19th. If we knew it would be as touristy and crowded as Amalfi/Positano we would change our plans. Advice? Of course we know this is high season. Just trying to make a decision for that day trip or not.

I was there in July a couple years ago and I thought Capri was worse than Amalfi town and Positano in terms of crowds.

The worst part on Capei is getting up to the town from the marina below. Once up there, by funicular, taxi or bus, go immediately to the area from Punta Tragara to Giardini Agusto, Pedestrian pathways.
We went for several nights and when we arrived, we had to stand on long lines( 45 min) for the funicular in the heat. This was in late September on a Wednesday. The Amalfi Coast seemed a little less crowded.

We were recently in both at the end of June. I felt that Capri was more crowded than Amalfi coast towns but both areas get pretty crowded in the summer, I think. I felt that we had more breathing room on Capri from the crowds once we got to Anacapri. We did not stand in line for the funiculars on Capri when we got off the ferry as it was very hot, the lines were very long and we were hungry! We took a taxi on Capri. Have a great time. Capri and the Amalfi coast are beautiful. Enjoy!

I’m sure it will probably be more crowded and it’s somehow more touristy than Amalfi/Positano. BUT, that doesn’t mean you can’t go there. You’re staying in Sorrento which is actually the ideal jumping off point. Get on the earliest ferry you can, one of the first ones. Capri gets hordes of tourists, but it takes time for them to get there! Many are coming from further away (Naples/Salerno) as well. Beat those crowds.

When you get there, skip Capri Town. It’s the most touristy part of the place, all designer stores and tourist wares. Most of the tourists logically mill around here first. Leave them there. Take the funicular and bus up to Anacapri. You’ll be amazed how few people are up there in the morning. Explore and relax a bit, then take the chairlift to Monte Solaro for it’s breathtaking views. By the time you finish lunch the crowds will be making their way up to you, and you’ll be headed back down. You’re done!

If you get there early enough, you’ve probably got time for the hour boat tour (minus Blue Grotto.) I really enjoyed it and thought it was a fair value. I wouldn’t fault you for skipping Capri, but I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. If you do it right, it’s beautiful. If you do it wrong, it’s a hell hole.

We just got back from Positano. I didn't feel it was overly crowded but we did off the beaten path things. Booked beach clubs, walked around then relaxed. We never had issues with restaurant reservations. We went to Capri, took a taxi from the Marina to another beach club on the other side of the island which we got to by boat and saw the cave that way. We skipped walking through the town. It was so hot but the crowds didn't bother us too much.
