Hello we are headed to Rome from Milan by train . would it be better to stay a night or two in Naples to do a daytrip to Capre and Pompeii first before spending 4 days in Rome?
Thank you
Tim Clifford
Will you be flying home from Rome?
If so- yes go all the way to Naples - visit Capri and Pompeii- then head back to Rome- putting all your Rome nights together at end of trip.
If you can fly out of Naples- stop in Rome first.
Some people prefer Sorrento to Naples. Oversimplified, you could say Naples has more history and art, while Sorrento has more shopping and resort activities. Naples is a gritty old city, Sorrento is a postwar cliffside (not, "beachside") resort. Both places have ferries to Capri, and are at the two ends of a suburban (crowded, elderly) transit train line, the Circumvesuviana, which stops at ancient Pompeii.
For either choice, it is necessary to go to Rome at least the day before you fly home from Rome.
