Capri anacapri question

Wondering what is best way to get from capri to anacapri. considering taking bus or just walking? We want to do blue grotto and mount solaro. If we walk will he come to the chairlift first and then walk to blue grotto afterwards? I heard it can be harder to walk back from anacapri to to Capri that even though its downhill the steps are steep and hard on your knees?

I'd suggest a taxi. Chairlift is good for the arriving at the very tip-top of Anacapri (great place for photos). Roads are windy and narrow on Capri, so I would think best to be in a vehicle. Didn't even know there were buses there, as I don't recall seeing any when we were there, but could have just missed seeing them.

There are vintage convertible taxis that are great fun to take, and fun for photos, too.

You will need to catch a boat to the blue grotto (so I assume you are asking if you walk to the pier?). Would not attempt to walk there from Anacapri, although it is probably physically possible, I'm guessing.

The buses between Capri and Anacapri are easy to use, and the finicluar is an easy way to get between the pier and Capri. Save walking for exploriation of the towns. You'll go up and down plenty of stairs walking to some of the good viewpoints.

I'm assuming you're asking about taking the Phoenician Steps (921 of them) between Capri/Anacapri? I haven't done them personally but as a hiker, I know firsthand that down can be as hard or even harder on knees and muscles as up. The stairs are steep, and they recommend ascending versus descending them due to the height of the risers: deep, steep step-downs are particularly wearing...as I learned on a couple of really long, painful descents over boulder piles and whatnot. Balance tends to be better going up than down as well, and some folks find looking down very steep, high trails/stairways a little vertigo inducing.

But you're young so your knees are in better shape than my battered, 63-year-old pair so it's up to you if you can handle them either direction or not. My bigger concern would be time, as I believe you're doing the island as a day trip? How much time you want to give these depends on how much of the rest of Capri you want to explore. I'd probably give them a shot - albeit a slow descent - if we were to do a second stay but there were other hikes that appealed more to us on the last 1.5 day go-around.

Yes, there are inexpensive little buses which run from the marina to Capri, Capri to Anacapri, Anacapri to the grotto plus a couple of other places: not many as the island is mostly pedestrianized. All the info you need is here (scroll down):

As noted, they can be pretty full at certain spots so the alternative walking-route suggestions could be useful if not wanting to wait for the next empty one to come.

Blue Grotto: I'm lukewarm on this one, and we skipped it altogether for multiple reasons. Depending on the seas conditions, there's no guarantee that you'll even get into the thing - the little boats can abort the mission at the last minute with no refund - and you're only it in a few minutes when they can access the opening. Large crowds, long queue, hassling for tips... Dunno. Not my idea of a good time.

Mount Solaro: did the chairlift. That was fun but we also did it first thing one morning before the queue got long.

If you’re day tripping to Capri, try to get there as early as possible. Anacapri was delightful in the morning hours, but fairly overrun by tourists/tour groups by the afternoon. The chairlift to Monte Solaro is not to be missed. The buses are easy to use, cheap, and use the same road as a taxi. There is a station in Capri town where you queue up in a very easy, orderly fashion. It’s a fun ride!

I have one rule: Always, always take the funicular, no matter where you are! They don’t build them where it’s an easy climb. Save your legs and relax. Capri is spilling over with gorgeous views, and you don’t have to climb 900 steps to enjoy them.
