I have one full day available during our trip and am trying to decide if going to Capri for half a day and then doing a land tour of the coast- Positano or Amalfi is too much for one day. We will be based in Sorrento for three nights. I have our itinerary set and only have one day available to do both places. Should we just do one location and skip the other? There will be four of us - my husband and two adult sons in their 20's. What is more appealing to the 20+ year olds? This trip is in early September.
Doing both Capri and the Amalfi coast would be too much for one day. Choose one location. Watch you tube videos to see what you might enjoy. The land route from Sorrento to Amalfi is very busy, curvy, and mountainous and can cause motion sickness. We enjoyed the views from the ferry between Positano and Amalfi and then taking an open air City Sightseeing bus to Ravello. In Capri we took the funicular up to Capri Town and saw the Caesar Augustus gardens and then a bus to Anacapri which we enjoyed. Travel books from the library may help in your decision as well as getting input from your sons. This a beautiful part of the world!
We were based in Sorrento for 11 days last April and learned that nothing can be done quickly on the Amalfi Coast. One day we booked a small group tour of the AC and of the 9 hour day, 4.5 hours were spent in a vehicle getting from place to place. We had no more than an hour and a half in each.
On our next day we took a ferry to Amalfi and then a bus to Minori. From there we walked the Path of the Lemons to Maiori and then a bus back to Amalfi. By then it was time to head back to Sorrento.
I'd pick one. We enjoyed Capri significantly more than either day on the AC, we could get there faster which gave us an entire day. I thought the scenery was just as spectacular as the Amalfi Coast, and if you plan well, you'll be able to avoid the crowds.
Thank you both for your replies. Great advice, I will definitely use! When taking a Ferry to Positano and Amalfi, did you exit the ferry and walk around the towns for a while then hop back on the ferry back to Sorrento?
We had timed tickets to Amalfi. It wasn't like the bus that you could hop on and off at each stop. We bought tickets for the 8am(ish) Alilauro ferry to Amalfi and about 4pm on the way back. Same with Capri.
