Could you clarify your question? Do you mean the best way to get there? The best sites to see on the island? How best to get from site to site?

Q: What is the best way to see the island of Capri?
A: With your eyes open.

Joking aside, the best way is by boat (only the only way to get there). Once in the island you can walk around. You can also hire a taxi for a full excursion around the island or if you need to travel for a longer distance (let's say from the Marina Grande to Marina Piccola or to Anacapri). The island is bigger than it looks on a map, especially when you are on foot, so taxis are good when you are tired.

Private cars are not allowed unless you are a resident.

How easy is it to get taxi's from town of Capri?
If you just want a boat tour around the island, which would be recommended.?
Thanks

Much of what you need to know about Capri can be found on this site:

"Best" is subjective. Our own "best" was to stay on the island a few nights and to explore it largely on foot, aside from a bus between Anacapri and Capri towns. We didn't take any boat trips aside from the ferries from the mainland to the island and back, and didn't feel as if we'd missed anything.

We spent four days on Capri and finally on the fourth day the sea was calm enough for boats to go out. We took one but preferred our time ON the island not sailing around it. Get away form the crowds in the city center, walk to Giardini Agosto. Then walk towards Punta Tragara, beautiful pedestrian paths with views. We stayed right there at La Minerva, wonderful hotel.

There are lots of taxis from the marina in Capri.

The hotel we stayed in, Hotel della Picola Marina, informed us when we dropped out bags, that other guests were looking to share a private afternoon boat tour around the island with a stop at the Blue Grotto, and asked if we were interested. It was early in the morning, so we took out time to decide as we visited Capri town , but went with it. They were a young German couple, about 30 years younger than us, but we had a great time. The weather had been choppy for the previous week, but was calm for us to enter the Blue Grotto. We enjoyed sailing around the entire island, and seeing all the various historical sites. The next day we took a bus up to Anacapri, took the chairlift to the top and enjoyed visiting Anacapri town.

We were glad that we stayed overnight and saw more than just a day trip would allow.

I think the first question to answer is are you staying overnight, or a day trip. I would recommend staying at least a night. Capri gets so crowded during the day. My fav memory of capri is waking up early and my brother and I hiking up to Villa jovial on a spectatcular day.

Two of my favorite vacation days of all time were on Capri! The first time we day-tripped from Sorrento and the second time we stayed in Anacapri. Both times we were traveling with a group of friends and we took a private boat tour with "Captain Gianni" www.giannisboat.com . We went around the entire island (skipping the touristy blue grotto). We stopped several times to swim, each time to a different, more secluded cave than the grotto, that we could swim into ourselves. We were splitting between 7 people or more but IMO it was a great value - even if you are going solo. They had pool noodles for the less confident swimmers but the water is so salty it's easy to float.

If you have one day to visit Capri, I would HIGHLY recommend hiring local guide Giovanna Donadio (338-466-0114), [email protected], to, as the Rick Steves Naples and Amalfi Snapshot Guide state, "escort you 'on a well-organized full day of fun' on Capri." "Well-organized" cannot be overstated. Without seeming rushed at all, Giovanna met us for the ferry from Sorrento to Capri, explained a bit about Capri during the ferry ride over, and had a driver waiting to take us to Annacapri. There we took the chairlift to Monte Solaro for the great views of the Bay of Naples. She then directed us to the best Annacapri shops for handmade sandals, lemoncello products, and Carthusia perfume which we had asked about. Then a walk through the Gardens of Augustus. And it was only lunch time after all that! She directed us to a delicious restaurant for lunch.

The best was yet to come! We had requested a private boat, which Giovanna arranged, to take us around the island and stop for a visit to the blue grotto. This was one of the most memorable days of our two-week trip to Italy. It is amazing that we were able to do so much in one day.
We never would have been able to organize this schedule of Capri on our own, especially after organizing the schedule for the entire trip. It was so nice to just let Giovanna lead us four 60+ year olds around Capri.

In addition, Giovanna is lovely and charming, loves her job, and knows her way around Capri!
