Hello,
As a special offer, the owner of the apartment we are staying in while in Rome is letting us also stay in his country B&B in Capranica, Viterbo, about 40 miles north of Rome. Does anyone have any experience visiting this area? Any ideas or suggestions for things to see or places to eat? I found some interesting articles and facts but I'm looking for real life experiences. Thanks all!
As usual, it depends on what interests you. Here, however, are some things we liked. Villa Lante, just at the edge of Viterbo, is worth seeing, especially the gardens. The little town of Tuscania has two lovely romanesque churches, which were being restored in 2003, when we were there. Should be done by now. There are also some Etruscan ruins. We had a great meal at a small hotel there, whose name might be Al Gallo.
I stayed in Viterbo a few weeks ago. It was somewhat interesting, especially the medieval quarter. Ate at Osteria San Pellegrino on the main street in the medieval quarter, which I enjoyed. Two women at my B&B had visited etruscan sites in the area, near the towns of Savana and Sorano, and said they are some of the best in Italy. That's certainly worth looking into. There's a website - www.leviecave.it.
We rented a flat not too far from Viterbo one year and we went to Cerveteri one day. If you will have a car and are interested in Etruscan ruins, tombs, etc., I recommend you go there. Tarquinia also has an Etruscan necropolis and is closer to Viterbo than Cerveteri.
Thanks all.
No we will not have a car, and I am hoping that Capranica has the same basic bus system as other places in Italy. Does anyone know?...
I'm really not that picky about sights and places to visit; everything in Italy interests me more or less so all your suggestions help a great deal.
