Over the years I've never had a problem just walking up and getting in. My favorite museum in Rome. Make sure you stop on the walkway between buildings to enjoy the view of the Forum!

The museum is rarely ever crowded, tours usually focus on the other big sights, just wander up and get a ticket.

Walked right in last February. I was nearly the only one in the buildings. Believe me, it's not that Rome was devoid of tourists at that time; the Vatican Museums, the Borghese and the streets around places like the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps were all quite busy.

While the museum is rarely crowded, the free Sunday might be one of those rare occasions. I would see it on another day. And do something outdoors that free day, such as the Borghese park.
