Capital One Savings ATM Non-Chip Card Question

I've used my Capital One Savings ATM non-chip card on prior trips to Italy, Spain, & France without any issues at bank ATM's. Has anyone had any issues with bank ATM's not accepting these lately? When I contacted Capital 1 about getting a card with a Chip I was informed that they only issue chip cards with their checking accounts not savings accounts. The representative & her supervisor were unsure if my card will work when I set up my travel notification.

Art, you might open a Capital One 360 checking account and transfer funds from your savings into checking. My 360 debit card is chipped (just received a new card last week, and I’m not sure if the previous card was chipped). The previous card worked seamlessly over five or six International trips in the last few years.

Open a checking account. Don't risk it. Europe hasn't had non-chip cards since the last century.

I was informed that they only issue chip cards with their checking accounts not savings accounts.

Then it appears a checking account is what you should have.

Make sure there is NOT an automatic transfer from the savings to the checking account. Keep only what you need in the checking account. That way if you card is compromised, the bad guys are limited to what they can access.

I second what Joe said. Our Capital One checking is just for travel, and we transfer funds from our “brick and mortar” as needed along our trip.

Last year I switched from the Capital One Savings ATM non-chip card to the Capital One 360 checking.

The original non chip card worked great for atm withdrawals in many European countries. I haven’t been to Europe now in over 2 years.

In addition to the new card having a chip, I seem to recall that Capital One changed their terms for the savings ATM card and were going to begin charging foreign transaction fees. The 360 checking had 0 foreign transaction fees.

If you decide to keep your old card make sure to verify that you have 0 transaction fees.

It was very easy to switch and get new cards. Neither account was paying any worthwhile interest so didn’t matter to me. This is my travel account, and I can easily transfer money in or out to other bank accounts held elsewhere.

Thanks Ellen for the heads-up on fees.
I had last used the card about 4 years ago without the fees & I see they added the fee when they converted the account. I'll be using my Schwab account now for my upcoming trip.
