Capital of Italy moved to Milan?

Please be aware of the possible change when you plan your travels.

Rome can no longer be trusted to be the capital of the country. No word of Pope Francis' plans for the Vatican. Is that moving too?

One of the reasons Milano does so well is that it looks after Milano. If Roma could follow that example, great. But Milano as a capital would care no more about the rest of the country than it does about anything outside the comune. Sadly, human nature writ large.

Roberto, prepare to be punished along with me for veering into politics rather than travel. Wait:

Milano - a great place for tourists to visit.

That was an interesting article, and it made some good points. A lot of the points he mentioned are things that the average "outsider" or tourist wouldn't be aware of, such as the corruption in Rome.

@Ken,
The average tourist would benefit greatly if things ran like a world class city. Buses would have a schedule, for example. City workers would not be able to call in sick to the degree 25% of them fail to show up on a given day, which affects sanitation, service at historic sites, and more. When we travel to Paris, London, or even Milan, we realize how much better Rome could be. People are starting grassroots efforts to clean up the city, but they cannot fix the transportation and other infrastructure issues.

I agree with Zoe, though. Wherever the capital is, it will be self-serving and not cater to the entire country. We can only hope a decent mayor has the strength to do something. Marion tried to fix some problems with street cleaning, but the potholes in the sidewalks could swallow a small child.

I prefer Romans to Milanese, so very much nicer, according to me. Corruption and maffia is not only in Rome and Southern Italy...This thing of Maffia Capitale has been going on for months now.
Milano has never been a capital, Torino, Florence and Rome have.

Milan has had more capital than Rome for quite some time now. After all, for every church in Rome, there's a bank in Milan. (^_^)

Laurel,

Thanks for the feedback. As I recall, the situation in Rome has been going on for quite some time, as I can recall posts from last year complaining of poor service on the Metro, etc. The situation with trash collection is also a problem in Naples and other places, so Rome is not the only place affected (hopefully there are no similar problems in Milan).

I can't speak too loudly about transit problems in Rome, as the Skytrain in Vancouver seems to be plagued with problems at times. Last year they had a major disruption due to a fire in a bird's nest under the concrete tracks. I was going to phone them and ask if the bird was a @#$% Pterodactyl. Their new Compass Card system has been a mess for months.
