Hi - I will be in Rome next year and will be renting a car to drive to my Grandparents birthplace - Canosa Di Puglia. We have begun looking at towns to stay (2 nights) as Canosa doesn't really have much in the way of accommodations. We will have a car so staying somewhere a short distance from Canosa is not a problem. When I look at Puglia, either online or in guidebooks, there is little written on this area. Has anyone traveled to this area that may be able to recommend somewhere? Any advice would be welcome. Thanks in advance.

The Puglia region is wonderful. Not sure where in Puglia Canosa is located. I can recommend any town by the sea...Polignano d' Mare is great, as is Monopoly.
We were in the region in May on a bike trip, so we go up and close with the roads and the small towns.... Also, for a taste (over dose really) of Trulli, try Alberobello. You might check into a Masseria for your stay..always out in the country, so really quiet and delightful. Try a google search for Masseria in Puglia and see what turns up, if you have a car, then that could be better than staying in town.
Thanks Ellen. I appreciate the information. Canosa is North of Bari and about 45 minutes South of Foggia. Trani is a location that we considered as it was about a 30 minutes drive.
I looked up Masserie and it looks to be too far South.
Masseria is the word for farm-type accommodations in the South of Italy, you should be able to find plenty of them in Puglia. In other areas they are called agriturismo. You could try booking.com for places near Canosa di Puglia, just to see what's out there even if you don't book through them. Lonely Planet covers Puglia pretty well.
If you are around Bari, then Polignano a Mare is just south of there on the sea. Massaria is a general term for a farm that has accommodations. We stayed in one just around Alberobello...well off the beaten track, but so quiet and the hosts were amazing.
Thanks Zoe and Ellen. I was not aware of what Masseria meant. I just reserved a Lonely Planet guidebook from my local library and will read that along with trying booking.com.
I appreciate the advice.
