Cancelled flight = last minute changes. Help!

Well our trip I have been planning for months is getting off to an awful start. We were scheduled today to fly out from Phoenix, layover in Dallas, then onto Rome. Well I woke up this morning to messages saying my first flight was delayed over 3 hours and I was going to miss my connecting flight. After 3+ hours on the phone with American Airlines- ultimately the best thing they could do is for us to leave tomorrow. I was initially devastated but I’ve realized there’s nothing I can do about it, and I’m trying to be as calm as I can, and just hope more than anything that nothing is delayed tomorrow.

Here’s my dilemma. This trip is for my daughter’s graduation and she really wants to go to Pompeii. Our first 2 nights we were going to be in Naples to visit Pompeii and then make our way back up through Rome, Florence and Venice - departing home from Venice. This has obviously completely messed up our plans and unfortunately we are also losing some money being so close to checking-in. With the time I have taken off of work, we can keep the rest of our trip the same, and then add 3 nights at the end. So Rome-Florence-Venice-Naples. Not ideal but this way we keep the rest of our plans the same.

The main problem I’m having is trying to find somewhere to stay this close to arrival. We want somewhere centrally located and we had reservations at Hotel Piazza Bellini which I was super excited about based on all the good reviews and recommendations but of course they are booked. We are a family of four which makes it more difficult. If we absolutely have to we can book 2 rooms but I’d rather not (I understand that might be my best option though). We are looking for 3 nights from 5/22-5/25. Any ideas???

Sorry this post is so long!!

I understand how upset you must be. Perhaps you could cut Naples and see Ostia just outside of Rome rather than Pompeii. It doesn't have the big name of Pompeii but they are very similar. As far as where to stay, I would look into an Airbnb, much better for a family than a hotel.

3 nights I assume you mean June 22-25?

If you can’t find anything affordable in Naples look at Salerno
A very nice less touristy town, easy to get to direct trains from Venice. Easy to Pompeii, nice waterfront with sandy beach and you could visit Paestum and take a ferry along Amalfi as well

Where are you flying home from now?

I second the idea of going to Ostia Antica instead. I was at Ostia and Pompeii on my trip in 2019 and we prefer Ostia! It s HUGE and you won't feel the crowds. Rick has a chapter on Ostia.
