Has anyone ever done this? Would you recommend it? Cost? Time? Is it possible to get a train back to Padua from Venice.

Are you talking about renting a barge/houseboat or taking a tour barge up the canals to Padua?

There are plenty of trains going to and from Padua and Venezia, but I have not heard of any barges on the canals.
