I'd like to walk on the Appian Way since some stretches of it seem absolutely lovely with nature and bits of history. These stretches seem more south of the city and have pedestrian walkways off the actual roadway so you won't get hit by anything (ex near Villa Appia Antica). However, when I Google Earth the roadway closer to the city (ex near the Hypogeum Vibia), the images show only cars on the road. There's technically a small sliver of the roadway you can walk on, but I don't want to be the ignorant tourist and walk where I'm not supposed to walk. I've read the roadway closes to cars on Sundays, but I will be in Rome during the week so I can't avoid them. Should I take a bus to further south on the road and start walking there, or does it not matter? Appreciate any help, thank you.
We did find the Appian Way, but it didn't seem safe to walk.
Yes you can walk it and also bike it. Cars are also allowed but only on a small stretch near the city, then they are not allowed anymore.
The part you may want to walk is from the Catacombs and further south. That portion is kept intact and is not accessible to cars.
The old Appian Way is now called VIA APPIA ANTICA, in case you want to see it on GoogleMaps
