Can you rent a car in Florence and drop it in Bologna?

Normally I dont believe in using a car in Italy, but there are several small towns in the Mazza & Lunigiana areas that I would like to visit. I would like to do it on my schedule, not on the bus schedule. Is it possible to rent a car in Florence but drop it off a couple of days later just a short ways away in Bologna?

Usually, when you rent one-way, it will cost you a fee to do so. If you do rent in Florence, do so from the airport and not in town. Take a taxi to the airport and rent from there. You don't want to get entangled in the ZTL and get fined heavily for driving in the historic city center. I can't stress enough the need for a GPS also. You can thank me later...

As long as you pick up and drop off in the same country you should not have a drop off fee. There may be some companies who are now doing that but most do not. Check with autoeurope or gemut.com and they will put you with companies who will not charge a drop off fee within the country. I second the gps suggestion.

Sure. Just use the 'drop in another location' box on the car rental web site and you'll see if there's any price difference.

Ray, take your own GPS! You will never regret it. Make sure that you take your International Drivers Permit, and your drivers license, and buy a good Michelin map of the area in which you will be driving.

Everybody gave you excellent advice! Play with the pick up and drop off locations on the Auto Europe web site. You will see that there is always a charge for picking up a car at an airport, but no charge for picking it up in one town, and dropping it off at another...as long as it is in the same country.
