Can you please help me with the order of my trip?

I am taking my family of 5 to Italy next summer. We would like to go to Venice, Cinque Terra, Rome, Sorrento and possible either Lake Coma or Tuscany? What is the best order of these places? I can fly into any airport and out of another one. With a 13, 15 and 17 year old daughter would your recommend Tuscany or Lake Coma more? Also does anyone have great hotels for 5 people for any of these locations? Thank you!!

For 5 persons I would advise you to book an apartment rather than a hotel, specially in cities like Venice, Florence.
There is much more to see in Tuscany than at Lake Como.
Tuscany is quite big and there is something to discover for each, hot spring waters, sea, villages, towns, cities, Etruscan tombs.
In the Lake District, I prefer Lake Ortisei or Lake Maggiore.
Como is third on my list and Garda fourth.

I hope you have about 2 weeks for this trip.

If you fly into Venice it would make sense to then go to Florence (Tuscany) then Sorrento and end in Rome where you can fly home from. The CT is a 6 hour train ride from Venice and doesn't really make sense in this itinerary. It's really hard to make suggestions without knowing how long the trip lasts.

Knowing how long you have and more of your interests would help. If you have 3 weeks or more all of these are doable - if you have less time then you should pare a couple locations.

Susan your trip is at least 13 months away. Have you looked at a map of Italy or checked with any airline or looked into anything ?

If you even keep your existing cities, Milan is missing where you could potentially fly into and Naples where you can fly out of - or the other way around. However, why those cities as opposed to others. I am sure you are going to get tons of well intentioned responses, however the more info you can provide or the more research you do would be helpful not only to you but to those answering your questions

You also didn't say how long your potential trip would be, but you should also consider the time to get from one city to the other.

Also, your 17 year old will be 18, so that's potentially 3 adults which might also effect prices and limit your hotel chocies.

Lastly, you might want to define great. Give a sense of your budget, because 5 people in a hotel is going to be expensive as will anything else.

Susan, how you intend to get around (trains/buses versus rental car) may also affect where to go. I recommend trains for the first-timer as they eliminate a host of complications but it's up to you. You definitely do not need or want a car for Venice, Rome, the CT or Sorrento but one in Tuscany may be useful.

And as above, how many days/nights do you have for this?

Cinque Terre is much more enjoyable midweek than weekends. Last time I checked the cruise ship schedules, sunday was the most crowded day in CT.

Fly into Venice. Out of Naples.

These would be the minimum amount of time I would spend in these places.

3 N. Venice. Train-Florence.

2 N. Florence. Rental car for Tuscany. Be aware of ZTLs.

3 N. Tuscany. Stay @ an agriturismo.

Drive to La Spezia, drop car, train to village of your choice.

3 N. CT.

Train to Rome.

3 N. Rome.

Train to Sorrento.

3-4 N. Sorrento.

Curreri Viaggi bus to Naples airport. Make sure you have a flight from here that leaves between 11:30-12:55. That way you don't have to spend your last night in Naples for a flight that leaves around 6 or 7.

Look at rome2rio for estimates of travel times.

Hope this helps.
