Can you drink wine in public area's in italy?

I've read a lot of people talking about buying a bottle of wine and drinking it in public area's and doing people watching. Is this legal?

Yes. Although some places (San Marco) discourage picnicking.

Rome is also cracking down on picnicing - especially at major tourist sites. But most likely you would be asked to move along, not fined. And the issue isn't the alchohol as it would be in the US, it's picnicing.

But don't confuse drinking wine or beer in public, in a park, piazza, etc. with being DRUNK - drinking wine is much more about being part of the meal than the "high". Being inebriated in public = not something you want to do in Italy.

Anthony is exactly right. Wine and beer in Europe is consumed much more as a part of the meal rather than drinking to be drunk. In fact, I can't remember seeing anyone really intoxicated any time we have been there. Well, except for the college age kids that were really enjoying themselves in Paris. Enjoy, and try to soak up as much of Italy as possible, it could be a long time till your next visit! Caio. Jeff
