Can you buy high speed train tickets for travel in July now?

Hi there,

I am trying to check of to-dos from my list and went to try to purchase tickets from the R.S. website by clicking on Rail Europe. We will be traveling in early July. I know someone had previously posted that train schedules (not sure if that is for all trains or high-speed trains) become available on June 12th but when I did a consultation with a Rick Steves travel advisor he said I could book a high speed train 90 days in advance. I tried to book a high speed train for our date of travel but got a message saying something like we couldn't find any tickets for that date.

Am I missing something?

Avoid Rail Europe and other third party resellers. Book directly with the company that actually operate the train.

You should be able to book now, but I noticed not all of the high-speed routes for post-schedule update are not yet available. Try every couple of days. When we lived in Italy we traveled very often and I noticed that in the lead up to schedule changes there were time freccia trains released erratically leading up to the change date. As mentioned above, do NOT use Rail Europe. I don't know why R.S. includes a link to them as it costs the traveler more.

Patrick, these are the websites you need to use for Italy's high-speed trains:

https://www.trenitalia.com/en.html
https://www.italotreno.it/en

They are different companies, and Italo may not service all of the locations in Italy you wish to get to.. Trenitalia will also most likely be your resource for shorter regional train journeys. As schedules will update in June, you're too early to book for July, but what's available this week for the same journey you desire for a specific day and time 2+ months from now likely won't change.

And yes, please don't use Rail Europe.

An observation --
I just purchased high speed tickets directly from Trenatalia for August 6th and for the first time used the drop down menu of fares for my senior 60+ discount. I noticed a fare called "me&you" which is the same rate as the senior discount (but not changeable) for a party of two traveling togther.
I dont know if it's new or I just didn't realize it the last time we were there in 2019.

I just noticed the “Me and You” fares on Trenitalia myself, a few months ago. They were available for purchase last January for travel in March. I thought they must be new—-perhaps an incentive to get people riding trains again.

This fare is an excellent option for 2 traveling together.

I will add another tip because I just found out about this myself for my upcoming trip. If you are booking Italo they run promos every week where you can save 20-40% on tickets. Check their Twitter or sign up for their newsletter. I managed to save a few bucks, not much, but hey its money that I can spend on other things in Italy!

Thank you all for these tips. I do have a few follow-up questions. If we are planning a day trip to Lucca, would Trenitalia or Italo be the trains to book with or are regional trains different? And would it be necessary to book now for travel in late June/early July or would be just go to Santa Maria Novella station on the day we want to go to Lucca and buy tickets then?

Thanks again in advance.

For a day trip from Firenze to Lucca, just buy day of travel. It is not a high speed line.
