Can wear open sandals into the Vatican? Nicer restaurants in Itlay?

Can I wear sandals into the Vatican? (I know shorts are not allowed.)

I prefer to only bring a SINGLE pair of shoes! (packing VERY lightly)

I'm leaning on sandals but if I need tennis shoes for reasonably nice restaurants (NOT 5 star) or the Vatican I probably won't bring sandals.

Hi Peter,

You can wear sandals in the Vatican (and St.Peter's Basilica). My husband and I both did. It's actually not the Vatican that they don't allow shorts. Its the Basilica.

I would however recommend bringing 2 pairs of shoes. We did so much walking that it was nice to rotate between 2 pairs. We only had carry-on size back-packs for 18-days and were still able to bring multiple pairs.

I think for men it is best to bring 1 pair of shoes that aren't sandals for dinner. For women I only wore sandals.

Have fun!

Peter,

Sandals are fine in any church.

Here is my mens travel packing list.

When I travel, I pick two of the three shoes depending on which are most appropriate for my plans. It's best to have two pairs of shoes rather than one pair.

Keep them lightweight. Next time you're in a shoe store, pick up a variety of shoes. Notice how some are heavy and some weigh almost nothing.

FWIW, you're more likely to have a problem getting into a restaurant wearing tennis shoes than sandals. But 95% of restaurants won't care.
