I'm having a hard time finding a train from cinque terre to Florence in july , I choose the different options of regional, other trains on trenitalia and nothing
need help!
Looks like the site only shows trains on that route about 8 weeks out. The last date that shows any trains right now is June 10th.
Wait a few weeks and you'll most likely find trains in July.
It's likely that you're having trouble finding trains as July is beyond the 10 June schedule change. If you search the Trenitalia website for a date in the beginning of June on the same day of the week that you'll be travelling, you'll have a good idea on what solutions are available. Which village in the Cinque Terre are you using for the search, and which station in Florence?
Don't be too concerned about buying advance tickets for that route. It's relatively short and will involve one or more Regionale trains which don't have discounted tickets. The price for those will be the same whether you buy in advance or buy on the day of travel. It's possible that one segment will be via a Freccia or Intercity train, which do offer discounted advance purchase tickets. However that's a short route and I doubt that you'll save much.
My suggestion - buy your tickets in the Cinque Terre the day prior to travel. Don't forget to validate locally purchased Regionale tickets prior to boarding the train on the day of travel.
Remember that the first leg is on the slow train to La Spezia.
Are you looking specifically for trains from La Spezia to Firenze SMN?
A) I hope you are looking on Trenitalia.
B) Where are you entering as your "from" location? Cinque terre is, as the name suggests, 5 towns and each has a station.. You need to enter the actual town you are starting from.
C) Yes, as others say, the timetable changes after 10th June and the new times may not yet be loaded. Just check for a date before 10th June, very unlikely to be major changes.
And, finally, do not purchase Regionale train tickets on-line, in advance because those tickets come with more restriction than the same ticket purchased at a ticket machine or ticket window in any station. Regionale train tickets are never discounted, never sell out so there is no reason to purchase earlier.
thanks for the help. I'm going to wait and by them when I arrive to cinqueterre monterosso, since they don't go up in price
angelica
Another question, I'm not sure what would be the fastest route to go to naples, should I go via Firenze to rome, change trains and all that, or is it faster from asissi to rome, then naples or from sienna?
any suggestions?
Angelica,
It's great to hear that you'll be staying in Monterosso, as they have a "full service" ticket office. The agents speak some English and you'll have no trouble buying tickets there. I'd suggest having a look at the Trenitalia website, so that you have some idea of which solution might work best for you (ie: shortest trip, fewest number of changes, etc.). Be sure to use the Italian names for the stations you'll be using (many cities have more than one station).
A reminder that with locally purchased Regionale tickets, DON'T forget to validate prior to boarding the train on the day of travel or you'll risk hefty fines. As I recall, there are a couple of validation machines in the transfer tunnel leading to the platforms, and at least one machine just outside the ticket office.
Just to clarify, the Regionale tickets are always the same price, but tickets for the "fast" trains such as Freccia or Intercity can be cheaper if bought well in advance. However, that's a short route so I doubt that there would be significant savings with advance purchase.
The quickest way to get to Naples will probably be a Freccia fast train from Florence, as they have some direct trains (no changes) on that route. For example, you could use a direct train departing Firenze SM Novella at 09:08 arriving Napoli Centrale at 12:00 (time 2H:52M). The Frecciarossa travels at up to 300 km/h, so it's a very quick trip! You could also look at Italo Treno (a competing rail network), but I didn't check their schedules.
You could save some money buying advance tickets for the Florence - Naples train, but you MUST be willing to commit to a specific train, date and departure time. For example, current fares shown for the 09:08 departure are....
- Super Economy €49.90
- Economy €54.90
- Base €75.00 (this is the price you'd pay if you bought the ticket on the day of travel)
Note that the cheapest tickets are non-refundable and non-changeable once purchased, so choose carefully before buying!
