Anyone know why I can't book the trenitalia highspeed train from rome to florence on July 8? It looks like before the 6th and after the 9th are bookable. I googled and saw there was a strike last year around those dates.

There is still no official statement about the dates of the July works, but the fact that they are not selling connections on that date looks like a strong hint. If so, Rome to Florence should be available on a temporary timetable still TBA, but arriving at Campo di Marte station instead of S. Maria Novella.
Although I too would normally take the train I LOVE Flixbus. I checked and the busses that leave around 730-930am are about $12USD. IMO it would be worth booking rather than waiting. And rather than waiting to find out whether there is a strike or not. A loss of $12 or 24 bucks would be nothing.

Passengers going to Florence should pick Firenze Campo di Marte from the "TO" field on trenitalia.com . Those going north, beyond Florence, will have to take a substitute bus to transfer between Campo di Marte and SMN.
And rather than waiting to find out whether there is a strike or not.
There is no strike, and since Campo di Marte is quite central there is no need to take a slow bus. Please, do not mud the waters with confusing speculations.
