can i travel from croatia by car thru slovenia (transit) and go to italy

im american and fully vaccinated. i hope the restrictions are more bark than bite. i am flying into croatia on june 12, im gonna try to take my rental car from croatia thru slovenia to my storage unit in trieste. to get my stuff and then go back to croatia . i wonder if i could say that is essential travel. the only checkpoints ive seen in the past are slovenian ones but since covid i would nt be suprised if at italian border and croatian border check points have been set up. maybe im worry ing too much. i think i can transit thru slovenia?

Well Croatia is an EU border so I imagine there are proper check points. Depending on the Covid situation I very much doubt these are "paper" restrictions - Europe takes pandemics seriously

i called up the slovenian embassy in usa and they said i probably would be able to transit thru depending if italy allowed it

All three are in the EU, but Croatia is not in Schengen so there will be a border check at the Croatian/Slovenian border: https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Fen.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FSchengen_Area&psig=AOvVaw2G0cYM_86Znzaz21c9YO28&ust=1622030669998000&source=images&cd=vfe&ved=0CAIQjRxqFwoTCMiP4KHl5PACFQAAAAAdAAAAABAD

Italy allows entry from Slovenia with a PCR test; and the official site says when traveling from Slovenia but does not say "citizens of Slovenia", so would a US Citizen be considered differently? The implication is no, but it could be just a bad translation: https://www.esteri.it/mae/resource/doc/2021/05/annex_to_self-declaration_form_justifying_travel_to_italy_14.05_eng_293.pdf and https://www.esteri.it/mae/en/ministero/normativaonline/decreto-iorestoacasa-domande-frequenti/focus-cittadini-italiani-in-rientro-dall-estero-e-cittadini-stranieri-in-italia.html

Transit through Slovenia is permitted: https://www.policija.si/eng/newsroom/news-archive/103470-crossing-the-state-border-during-the-coronavirus-epidemic

No European country that has opened its borders to US Citizen since late last year, has turned around and closed the borders and the trend appears to be that more borders will open, not less.

james e. you have posted good information. now things are in very fast flux right now. i hope that by june 15. movement by rental car will be allowed easily for fully vaccinated people. i see all the damn forms italy is requireing. again i have a storage unit in italy with perishable things in it. i need to get to. its just over border in treiste. slovenia will let me thru if italy allows it. my gut says i show up at border with my vac card on june 15 and they will let me thru with the valid reason i speak of. somethings gotta give here. we cant go on like this for years. good info. you posted james e.

only border check in the past is at slovenian checkpoint where they stamp my us passport. but now with covid maybe croatia and italy have set up checkpoints?

Because Croatia is not in Schengen, a border check to/from Slovenia would be expected. As Italy has sort of opened and the rest of the EU has not, then border controls will need to be set up if the EU really wants to enforce their rules.

italy wants to open up desparately. like France does. i think France and Italy will be copying each other. i really think an American who shows proof of full vaccination would be able to pass with a justified reason. your comment james about croatia.. croatia is allowing fully vaccinated to come in to the country with only a proof of paid accommodation the only rule. now I'm curious why the proof of paid accommodation is a rule. one of two reasons. one they don't want people flying into croatia and then leaving to go to rest of euro zone, or reason two they want to be able to track people if someone on plane is infected or something like that.
my gut says that june 1 or june 15 will bring even more relaxed rules and bottom line I wonder if the bark is worse than bite that border control has some lee way on what happens. I'm a single man fully vaccinated that needs to go to a border area of Italy for some days to retrieve things in storage unit. i call that essential travel

I call that essential travel

Does the Italian government? If they don't, what you think is irrelevant.

You may want to contact an Italian Embassy/Consulate before you show up at the border and engage in a discussion of what 'essential' is.

yes calling italian consulate is a good idea. i guess my gut says that by june 15. they will open even more. once you let American travelers in with no quarantine, which I think will happen I think for sure on July 1, and maybe june 15, they cant really restrict movement , one question is will they require their new green pass for foreigners. all of these passes are logistical nightmares which they are having trouble implementing as we speak my hope is that they are gonna be letting vaccinated people thru the cracks very soon now. i will be at border on June 15, if they don't allow it I just turn around and go back to Croatia. my guess is that by july 1 at latest some big changes gonna occur. france and Italy need the tourist dollars now.

i called a hotline in Italy . it is possible to go . 1. antigen test 3 days before hand. 2, digital passenger locator. 3. contact local medical authorities upon arrival where u are going. this is until July 31 of 2021....i might skip it. croatia is easier.
