Can I rent a car in September in Orvieto?

We are traveling by train from Florence to Orvieto and would like to rent a car there. But we are having trouble finding a car rental there.
Any suggestions? Should we rent the car in Florence??

We rented at Hertz...right across the street from the train station. Not the friendliest place to rent, but turned out fine. Take pictures of the car, just in case. We asked for an automatic, and it was waiting for us. You will love Orvieto. We stayed at Antica Olivaia.....the best hosts in the world and absolutely beautiful up on the mountain.

I tried autoeurope me told me that they don't have cars there but I suspect it may be because it is September. I will try Hertz but online nothing came up. Not sure what to do next. But we are excited to learn where you loved staying and will see if they have any availability! ty

Hertz is the only agent in Orvieto, currently. Someone recently reported in this forum that AutoEurope no longer works with this Hertz office. But it is bookable on the Hertz site.

We looked into using Hertz but the prices were pretty high - especially with zero deductible insurance. You might look at AutoEurope and pick up the car in Chiusi. Prices are significantly less. It is a short, inexpensive train ride from Chiusi to Orvieto.

There is only Hertz in Orvieto.
AutoEurope and Kemwel, two affiliated consolidators often mentioned in this forum, no longer work with that Hertz location, therefore if you want to rent from that location, you need to rent using the Hertz website (or 800 number) directly.
You might also consider picking up the car in Florence and leisurely drive through Tuscany all the way to Orvieto. If you take the freeway you can get to Orvieto in about 2 hours, but I would take the Via Chiantigiana (SR222) and the Via Cassia (SS2) instead of the freeway and visit a couple of hill towns on the way there. It will take longer using regular two lane highways, but it will be a nice day trip.

I thought the Hertz was permanently closed?

Not sure if you know this yet, but automatic cars are extremely hard to find in a town without an airport.
We wanted an automatic from Avis in Chiusi and they didn't have any. We ended up having to rent from Avis in Viterbo and drive to Tuscany from there. The Perugia airport Avis has automatic also

Agree with Roberto, It is a easy drive from Florence to Orvieto if you would like to rent there instead. SR222 is a beautiful drive

I have learned a lot since my original post. The Hertz rental office is still open in Oriveto. It is closes early on Saturdays and is completely closed on Sundays. The Hertz Italy representative advised me that if I wanted to drop the car off the closest place was
Florence! Luckily I checked with the owner of the agriturismo (the one recommended by Susan from an earlier post (thank you it looks wonderful!) Daniela emailed me and assured me it would be no problem she would arrange for us to leave the keys in a nearby cafe.
Now to reach out to find out where to go and what to to in Umbria from Oriveto!

I have a car reserved in Orvieto with Hertz in September. The price for 2 days, manual shift, returning to Orvieto was 143 euros, plus train fare to Rome, our next stop. The price for 3 days, one way to Rome Termini, was 88 euros!

So this makes it much cheaper - and more convenient - to rent a car one way from Orvieto to Rome, rather than returning the car and taking the train.
Surprise!

The Hertz Orvieto car rental office has moved its location. I just returned from Italy (July 11) and we rented a car from that office, but had trouble finding it because it is no longer "across the street from the train station." Here are new directions: Exit straight out of the train station and cross the street to the funicular entrance. Turn left and go past the funicular entrance to the end of a very long block. You will come to a gas station. Turn right, go through the gas station parking lot, and cross the street at the crosswalk to reach the Hertz office which is now across that street from the gas station. This will all make sense when you are there!
