So, if I'm in Italy and ask for decaf coffee, will I get it or will I be stared at like some heathen idiot? If someone does serve me something they say is decaf, can I trust it to really be decaf?
Nothing against caffeine. After years of coffee abuse, I succumbed to an erratic heartbeat. No caffeine, happy heart rhythm.
And I don't something from a jar of instant first opened months ago.
We dont remember a decaf option tho in the larger cities it is likely available in some places. Perhaps it is widespread but was never something that we looked for as Paul drinks real coffee and Sara only ventures into coffeeland w cappucino. There is definitely decaf available in supermarkets (instant). Why not drink something else?
I only ever saw the Decaf in stores instant as posted.
Why not bring some of those instant packs with you or purchase when you arrive at a grocery then you KNOW what you are getting.
Yes, you can absolutely get decaf coffee in Italy. I always ask for decaf and have never, ever had a problem anywhere, whether it was a restaurant, cafe, coffee shop, bakery... wherever I was they always had decaf.
I forgot to say it was always brewed coffee, not out of a jar. It was always delicious. We've been all over Italy, from city to tiny hill towns and I never had a problem getting delicious decaf.
After 13 weeks in Italy spread out over 6 years I am sorry but I don't assume or trust. Higher end places, especially when busy, might have enough volume of business to justify brewed decaf. Otherwise, ask and be skeptical. If having coffee late evening after dinner then for sure ask for hot water as if for tea and use your own prepack instant decaf.
j.c., during my travels in Italy last fall, I don't recall seeing Decaf Coffee available anywhere? Most often there was no filter coffee available, so "Cafe Americano" was the closest option.
However, based on the replies so far it appears that you won't have any trouble finding this.

We got decaf brewed coffee in the big cities and in the small towns.
Yes. Just order espresso, capuccino, americano etc. and add the word 'decaffeinato' afterwards.
Just returned from extensive travels through Italy and Austria. Our 16 yr old often needs a quick meal and we end up at McDonald's. What's great is that they also have Espresso, Cappucino, etc. at good prices and fast. Across from the train station in Florence, that McDonald's has a McCafe' with great coffee drinks and pastries. I know a lot of you will boo hoo this idea, but it is a quick pick-me-up in the afternoon and you don't always want to "buy" a seat at a cafe.
My 80 yr old mom (world traveler) refers to McDonalds' as American Embassies!
I don't feel bad about resting my feet and buying something there once in awhile.
It seemed an interesting experience -- McDonalds' in Italy are much nicer than in the US
(tiramisu, pastries, variously seasoned burgers). I wanted to tell all the Italians that their
McDonald's is nothing like ours, tho' :)

Denise, I have purchased many McDonald's iced coffees while sightseeing in the warm summer months in Europe!! And every single one was delicious and refreshing.
