Can I buy a ticket for Pompeii when I get there? Or should I buy it beforehand?

Is it okay to get my ticket for Pompeii when I arrive, or do I have to get it before I make the trip to ensure entry?

Is there a limit to how many people can enter the site at any given time?

Is there an advantage to getting the ticket beforehand?

I understand you can select a guide to Pompeii when you get there? Are the guides competent enough? Any tips on selecting one?

I understand information is available at the entry point? Any advice on which guide(s) to select?

We went last May 2018, off peak. We bought the ticket when we got there. No line no waiting. We did not want a guide we had a guide book.

We were there in July and bought ticket when we arrived. Not too long of a line. We did go with a guide. It was the service located in the building and we were happy with the services. There were about 20 people in our group.

Just do it all when you get there. It was a slow day when we got there so we had want amount to was a private guide for the four of us. Our guide gave us a number of choices -- length, special interests, etc.

Buy ticket when you get there

The RS audio guide..free.. is very good. Used it when we went and it looked like we went everywhere the tour groups did.

We bought our tickets when we got there. My wife and I actually joined a family from Philadelphia and a couple from England to get a private "family" tour (8 people total). Turns out everyone was really cool (including our guide), and we had a great time. It ended up being just a couple Euro more than the larger group tours. Seems like there are many tour operators there, so I felt like we just had to choose one and hope for the best. Maybe we just got lucky!!!

Yep, everyone is right, it is usually not too crowded-and it is huge, so I doubt they have to cap the number of visitors. I don't see an advantage to buying ahead. We walked right up and got tickets in May 2 years ago. There are guides there, at least when we went there were a few. We tried to get a guide to share with another family but it was a light day and we couldn't find anyone to join us. In the end, we just did it ourselves using RS audio guide for some parts. It worked out well for us, but I think a tour would have been nice. We didn't want to pay for a private tour, since it was our arrival day and we didn't know how long we would last or if it would be worth it. Have fun!!
