Put it in your CHECKED luggage. Wrap some of your clothes around them and they should be fine. Shipping is out of the question as it is very expensive to ship from Italy and then you may not receive it!!!!

The wine shop att the winery we got ours at wrapped bubble wrap around the bottle once, then put in a box. All three bottles fit into a large cereal size box. We then packed clothes on top and under it. Got back to us in US fine. In another luggage bag we put two liters of olive oil. If you can find them in metal containers then just put plastic around them in case they leak.

Olive oil can leak in a pressurized hold. To be safe, put it in a ziplock or wrap it in plastic wrap before you pack it to fly home.

If you pack the wine/olive oil in your carry on are you charged a fee per bottle or anything? Or is it just like packing normally and you don't have to pay extra?

James - with the newer liquid rules for carryon baggage, you won't be allowed to bring a bottle of liquid anything past security if it has more than three ounces unless its a medical necessity.

In the checked bags you should be fine. You are allowed a certain amount of wine and spirits per person for the Feds. In theory there should probably be a state revenue fee per bottle, but most places don't say anything if you just have a few bottles.

If you purchase olive oil, you MUST make sure that it closes with a screw on top. If it has a cork, it WILL leak. The cork will pop off in the luggage hold, or if exposed to too much heat. Even if they shrink wrap the bottle, you might have a problem.

IMO, if you an only purchase oil with a cork top, skip it- it will be wasted money - it will leak.

Olive oil with a cork doesn't always leak. We brought 2 bottles home last year without any leaks. So, if you've already purchsed the oil and it has a cork don't toss it. We've been bringing along bubble wrap and zip lock bags just in case. There is a bit of risk but so far we've been lucky and we've arrived home with our wine and oil intact. Good luck.

Hi.. As everyone has said, bring a few back in your checked luggage. They have large ziplocks that will be fine. I would put 2 zip locks on them.I never travel without many ziplocks.

As has been pointed out on other threads, the biggest problem, and fear, of packing any breakable bottles in your checked luggage is not that you put them in ziplock bags (a great idea, BTW), but if the baggage handlers decide to play endzone touchdown spike-dance with your bags at the American airport when you arrive.

We brought home Olive oil & wine in our checked luggage and the olive oil that was in a box broke (we didn't have in zip lock bag either...ugh). It had survived 5 other flights, but sadly not the one home.

Anyway, if you do plan on it, wrap it in as much padding as you can! It was really good olive oil too :(

I brought back wine and oil and had my zip bags. Do not bring on the plane. It will be taken and tossed.
We also had cheese that was vacuumed packed. Nearly at the end of my oil and I am on a ration right now.
